Chapter Seven

The house was still in shambles from Micah’s attempt at boxing up important papers, and now it was in worse condition from the two of them searching for Abe’s letters. The dining room table held loads of envelopes, but none of them were addressed to Micah.

The sun was setting, and the shadows were creeping into the house, casting a darkness that threatened to infiltrate Lucy’s soul. She took a deep breath as she looked around at the chaos in front of her. She was so close.

If Abe had worked out a way to explain to Micah about The Elderwood, this was her greatest chance of getting Micah to protect the portal. She could return home and prove to her father that she was worthy of a seat at the table. She could put an end to the arrangement and save herself from a lifetime of unhappiness as Lady Lucella Sloan. If she could find these letters, maybe Abe’s words would solve all of Lucy’s problems.

Her breath caught at the thought of Micah’s reaction to the truth. Would he accept the letters for what they were? Would he lay down the grief and anger he held?

“I’ve looked everywhere for any paperwork for the lawyers,” Micah told Lucy, breathless from the endless search. “I don’t know where else to look. This place is like a maze.” He looked around in defeat at the boxes and papers strewn about the main floor of the house.

“His study,” Lucy said with a question on her tongue. “You haven’t been in there because I’ve been in there, have you?”

“True, but I’d already looked in there before you got here,” Micah explained. “There weren’t any important documents. Just books.”

“But you weren’t looking for mail before,” she said with a glimmer in her eye. “In fact, I’d bet there’s a lot you missed in the study,” Lucy hinted, knowing there was at least one thing he had not seen.

Lucy led Micah up the stairs, hurrying as best as she could in her unlaced boots. She was in such a rush to get back to the house from their game in the woods that she didn’t even bother tying them. As she stepped into the room, she slowed to get to the bookcase that held the photograph of Micah. She carefully took it and held the picture out to him.

“Here,” she said gently, handing it to Micah. “See? He kept this. And from the worn appearance, I’d bet he looked at it often.” Lucy pointed to the soft creases in the photograph.

“Where did you find this?” Micah asked in awe, taking the picture in both hands, holding it reverently.

“On the bookshelf. Here, between two books that clearly did not match the others. Look,” Lucy encouraged as she took his arm and brought him closer to the shelf, pointing to the two books Abe valued above all others.

These small touches between her and Micah that once felt so taboo, now felt so warm and welcoming to Lucy. Micah’s presence offered something that she could not quite put her finger on.
